Valentine's Day Build-up

Valentine's Day was today, but my second graders have been anticipating it all week! The day FINALLY arrived! We decorated our bags, had yummy treats, and watched a fun Valentine's Day movie. We had so much fun! I got a ton of sweet, caring, and some interesting gifts. I also got them bubbles, stamps, and their favorite, mustaches! By the end of the day all of my kiddos were ready for a nap! Needless to say, I think I could have used one, too.

Each year we make a Valentine's Day scrapbook. I just make little books for them and they tape the cards inside. This is a fun little keepsake for them and lets them keep all of their cards in an organized place. Their bags are used for their candy. The kids love putting their cards in their books!

This one showed so much creativity that I had to share:

Here are some gifts from my 2nd graders. They are so thoughtful! Love it!!

Like I said, they LOVED their mustaches!

Hope you and your kiddos had a great Valentine's Day! Now to rest, relax, and try to ignore the 5 pounds of chocolate sitting on my dining room table!

Working and Playing Inside

So...for the past two weeks we have had inside recess. Some look upon this as pure torture, but I have found a great website that seems to help keep my kids moving and get some of those wiggles out! We use it all of the time to burn off some energy on cold days. It is all kid appropriate and they love it! Our favorites are "I'm Gonna Catch You" and "Whip My Hair."

Enjoy!!

Another thing we worked on today was our fluency. I love working with groups on specific skills. I use the CAFE a lot for goals with my students. I have five groups that I work with every day. I have found a wonderful resource with fluency! They are from Stephanie Stewart over at Falling Into First. They are her Flash Fluency: Winter Fluency Pack. It comes with flash cards with fluency phrases and it does a great job with sight words. Here are some of my students practicing with the fluency phrase cards.

100th Day Celebration

Friday was our 100th Day Celebration! Technically, it will be on Monday, but we decided to do it on a Friday. I found this awesome app called AgingBooth. It is $0.99 and totally worth it. You can take a picture of your student and then it ages them.

Here is my son Champ:

So what I decided to do was take a picture of each of my students. I printed them out and then we used a writing prompt. They glued their pictures on the paper and some of them were so creative and others were just down right hilarious! This was such a fun activity to do and a great way to work on their mechanics. My second graders truly enjoyed doing this (even my reluctant writers were excited)!

I got this awesome writing prompt in a FANTASTIC Hooray for the 100th Day pack from
Teaching in High Heels!

This pack was wonderful! Thank you!
